After the Christmas holidays this project is similar to the last project, creating a book cover but different this time, it's creating a record cover based upon a song I was given to use, I had three options:
Listening to the songs and watching the videos, I've decided to use The Formidable Joy- This Ladder is Ours. When I was at Kendal college, picking a song to create a portrait was something I did, the song I did back then was Take That- Rule The World. It was real fun. So with this in mind I start watching the music video on YouTube and reading the song lyrics over and over again. And I thought it would be cool to create a record cover with some scenes from the lyrics and add them along to make a point of what is happening in each picture on the record cover. Let’s take this walk, it’s long overdue And let this loathe crawl over you finally Let’s take this walk, it’s overdue Let’s sit and talk and slow things down Just be our old selves again finally Let’s take this walk Let’s take a walk to somewhere pretty This ladder is ours This ladder is ours We can be anybody else Hold on to the fringe Jump through from the past This ladder is ours This ladder is ours This is where everybody turns Out right in the end Can you play a part? See us walking through the sunshine Ask me where I’ve been Back to Ire Back to desire This is where it all begins This ladder is ours This ladder is ours We can be anybody else Hold on to the fringe Jump through from the past This ladder is ours This ladder is ours This is where everybody turns Out right in the end Can you play that part? This ladder is ours This ladder is ours This ladder is ours This ladder is ours This ladder is ours This ladder is ours This ladder is ours This ladder is ours I looked at the lyrics carefully and choose which ones I could use, for the record cover. They are:
I made a couple of rough drawing ideas at the same time as I was creating developments with each scene and lyric. But on the last week of the project, I have made the best ones to use. The idea on the first lyric is, "See walking through the sunshine, Ask me where I've been," is like someone walking on the ladder into the sky towards the sunshine, like ascending to heaven. The idea of the second lyric is, "Just be our old selves again finally, Let's take this walk, Let's take this walk to somewhere pretty" is another ladder at the top of the clouds and on top of the clouds shows a castle and a forest in the background. This would be what the lyrics is saying going somewhere nice. The idea on the third lyrics "Back to Ire, Back to desire, This is where it all begins," is going back to where you started (maybe back to where you were born or going back in time), and having the things you use to have. You want to have it back again. And the idea of the fourth and final lyrics "Jump through the past, This ladder is ours," is running through the ladder and jumping at the other end where there is a clock. That is more like going back in time. When that was done, I've added a couple more ideas into record cover. Before I presented my work to my tutors and classmates. What I thought of adding in the design, was a little pop-up. Putting a pop-up went okay. I put the idea in the middle of a record cover. I thought it'll be cool to add in a ladder with a figure at the end. When I present the work, my tutors and classmates they say I did a bit better the work, good colour, it captures the energy and understands the song. The pop-up was almost good techniques, probably need to practice these technique ideas. What else I could to improve this design is make the colours more punchier and look for better images and photos for a background. Next time, I'll take their advice.
