A few weeks ago, a party of the 1970s' has happened at the Silverdale Hotel in Silverdale, Cumbria. I was sorted of there for the party to happen because I was working on my shift in the hotel that night I wasn't able to see the event properly because I was working very hard in the kitchen but despite my stress of helping out it was a very successful night and along with the other staff members that night, my boss Richard said thank you to everyone witnessing the party.

From listening to the music in the kitchen and looking over the other ideas I did for Shelley to create the poster design, I'm thinking of working on a few drawings of the 70s', when I get the free time from work, no party event, no concerts, just something that's related to the 1970s' from movies/tv shows and artists/songs for a little. The reason of doing this is because it was fun doing the ideas from what I know, watch and learn of the 70s' in my own way (including with my parents and grandparents), so doing a few poster-like-drawings would be something I would like to do on my own.

Long after I finished working on the poster/tapestry designs for this years' a staff member of The Silverdale Hotel (Shelley) has asked me to design a poster set in the 1970s' for an upcoming party, later in August.

Before I got started, Shelley and I discussed on what should I draw that is from the 70s' movies, t.v., singers, characters, etc... and the information of what to put in the poster design, like:

• Title- The 70s, not just cheese and pineapple on a stick!!!
• Info- Tickets £20 to include a complimentary Babycham on arrival. 70's style buffet. Prizes given for best dressed 70's couple and widest flares and an evening of 70's floor fillers.
• Date- Friday, 7pm, 23rd August 2024
• Location- The Silverdale Hotel, Shore Road, LA5 0TP

This was the information given for coming-up event, with this now known I get straight to work on some ideas for a poster. Some of these I don't exactly know because, I haven't watched them, but I know some of the movies and tv shows that they've referenced when I was a kid.

Rough Idea set:

Poster idea 1

• Poster of "Starsky and Hutch", and "The Dukes of Hazzard".
• Man standing in the middle of the poster, Huggy Bear (Snoop Dog) from "Starsky and Hutch".
• Starsky and Hutch, with the red ford Gran Torino car and cheerleaders on the one-side of the poster.
• "The Dukes of Hazzard" (Bo and Luke Duke), with the General Lee car and Daisy Duke on the one-side of the poster.

Poster idea 2

• Poster of " Jaws", and "Star Wars".
• Captain Quint from "Jaws", and Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader/Obi-Wan Kenobi from "Star Wars", standing next to each other in the middle of the poster.
• The Orca ship and the great white shark, on one-side of the poster of the "Jaws" background.
• The battle of the Death Star with X-wings and the "Star Wars" background on the one-side of the poster.
• R2-D2 and C-3PO, at the corner of the poster.

Poster idea 3

• Poster with a "James Bond", background with Roger Moore in the design.
• A figure at the right-side of the poster.
• Three dancing ladies on left corner of the poster.
• The "gun barrel sequence", from the "James Bond" movies as part of the background of the poster.

Poster idea 4

• Poster of people dancing from the 1970s'.
• Three people one man and two women dancing in the poster, with their fancy clothes in the 1970s'.
• A colourful background with stripes and patterns.

When I showed the first ideas to Shelley, she was smiling her face off loving what I've done, but she wanted to have them all the problem is there won't be any room to get it all in. What I did first was re-draw the ideas again with a little more detail in them.

After getting the poster ideas more detailed, I when to discussed with Shelley on picking two of the best ideas she likes and what changes that she would like to make. Shelley like the second and third poster ideas. What she want to change or add up for both ideas is merge "James Bond" along the gun barrel sequence with the "Death Star" battle, and add in the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO and then add in the pineapple hedgehog.

​Second Idea set:

After that was shortly done, I asked Shelley once again on which one she'd like for her poster she picked the one on the right, this time I worked on it again with more detail and with some colour.

First Development:

The more I worked on the poster design, the more happier Shelley was at seeing it. What she like me to do next on the final development in put in more colour in the background. So that is what I did next.

​Final Development:

And finally I did one final check with Shelley with on the final design itself, I've been told the only change I need to do is change the colour of the dresses the ladies are wearing. Instead of gold I be using the primary colours (red, blue and yellow).

What I have done is split the poster into four drawing, so I could get a lot better detail and composition for the design.

Final drawings:

As soon as I got the drawings finished and scanned, I put them straight onto photoshop step by step. Making the drawings more visible and adjust to colour and brightness.

Photoshop Adjustments:

Almost had one or two misses, while I was creating the poster but I was able to get them sorted and then over the work with Shelley before printing it out and handing over to her to make copies of them.

The final poster design of "The 70's:

So far, Shelley has made one copy to display near the main entrance to the Silverdale Hotel. By now she would have made a few more and place them across Silverdale itself for locals and visitors to see, I won't have a chance to see any of them this week because I'm away, so I'll be checking them out on way on my next work shift next week.
