Art JournalAfter the Christmas holidays I was given two projects at the same time. The article is about banning electric scooters across Europe. So I start doing some drawings about electric scooters, and ideas than just two or three. When showing and speaking to my tutor Tony he says that in some way, I need to show that electric scooters are banded for the uses in Europe, because there's enough small vehicles around, like wheelchairs, scooters and push-bikes. That's enough to not cause any more accidents if they're on the roads with cars and trucks and I know exactly what that's like. When I was nineteen I was in an accident from a car running me over from my push-bike. I was on my way home from work about to get something for my brother David (it was his birthday, on that day), the next thing I wake in a hospital in a lot of pain. My brother, his ex-girlfriend Joanna and my mother were at my side telling me what happened... couldn't believe it. I got lucky to walking, my injuries were not serious, but they were painfully bad. It's mostly bruises and scratches all over me (including on my head from the helmet that saved my life), cuts and scapes on my left ankle, two scares on my back (one of them from a piece of headlight, from the car that hit me), a cracked sternum (which was very uncomfortable) and a broken left pinkie on my hand. Worst summer of my life. The first ideas I did to for an illustrated article was one or two electric scooters riding pass cars and people, like they're trying to get away from the law, but the last ideas were a little better where the law or the judge or stop signs are announcing from banning electric scooters with a couple of people riding by, trying to get away. I've done a lot of illustrated articles of electric scooters in a mixture of drawing pen/pencil, watercolour paint and digital collage. Towards the end of the project I've done two more illustrated articles, each with the artwork, title (The Guardian) and all the information I copied from the original. When I showed the work to Dwayne and Tony, they told me to, be more impulsive and less methodical, because of how neat my artwork is can sometimes slow me down. So I needed to think about trying things digitally by scanning images and editing using Photoshop, using alternative pens and inks, the pens I used in the project are quite ‘crude’ and I'm not allowed to create different moods and techniques and the work often lacks depth. For example I created my artwork with the same drawing pen, but in different set from thin to thick to help create some depth in the artwork like when you doing perspective drawing. So I needed to try and introduce some layers into my work to create depth, some of it is very flat for example, thick black marks would be forward and thin grey marks in the back. So to try use different types of paper than just plain paper. "Do not be afraid to try new things and keep practicing", that's what they also said. I'm not trying out new things and of course I'll always keep practising. At the same time as when I was working on developmenting the book covers of "The Tree", and "The Chair", I also develop the illustrated article, with the background, information about electric scooter and title and it went okay, made improvements on the illustration. As before I did the developments with a mixture of drawings, watercolour paint, digital collage. This time using depth in both background and character, and in one or two drawings with a little less control around the edges of the building and the law paper. For a little fun and I re-used some collage images that I've used before, to some made good effect. Back in time there're used drawings and illustrations in news articles, I'd like to try to use one or two of those articles on my third year.
